Materials and Characterizations for Cultural Heritage

 Archeological and historical finds, monuments, artworks, and artifacts constitute tangible cultural heritage of single peoples and mankind and, therefore, one of the primary duties of a civilization is represented by their study and the preservation for the future generations. Science and technology have always employed their more advanced solutions to unveil the deepest secrets of cultural heritage artifacts. In recent time, advanced characterization methods, from the macroscale down to the nanoscale, have been employed to accurately study these artifacts in order to reveal details of the Artists’ techniques and materials, as well as to monitor their status, in order to identify more effective strategies for their preservation. Nanotechnologies are offering innovative solutions to this purpose, e.g., for the accurate monitoring of artifacts through nanostructured sensors or developing innovative materials for restoration.
