Materials Challenges In Thermo-Nuclear Fusion Reactor Research

16 SEPTEMBER   sveglia 16:00 - 17:30

TT.IV - Technical Multi-Track with Parallel SYMPOSIA
Materials Challenges In Thermo-Nuclear Fusion Reactor Research
Co-organized with ENEA
Chair: Marco VITTORI ANTISARI, Associazione NanoItaly
Due to the exposure to intense fluxes of 14 MeV neutrons and to the pulsed operation mode of the tokamaks, producing severe thermo-mechanical stresses, unprecedented service conditions are expected for materials to be utilized for the construction of the future controlled thermo-nuclear fusion reactors. Consistent experimental efforts are therefore being spent to upgrade materials and materials technologies initially developed for fission reactors, like for instance radiation resistant ferritic/martensitic steels. The development of high-heat flux materials and of related joining technologies is another area of strategic importance to develop effective plasma-facing components, such as the divertor. Innovative production routes and advanced micro-structural characterization are essential to answer such challenges. The symposium is intended to provide updated information on general materials needs in international fusion programs and some contributions on a few more specific subjects.
